A sample of the ASL translation of the lections is posted with the permission of the Rev. Dr. Virginia Nagel, who created them for the ECD. The lections are from both the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer and the Revised Common Lectinary rendered into American Sign Language by the Rev. Dr. Nagel.
The bound lectionaries for 1. Year A, 2. Year B, and 3. Year C are available for purchase for $10.00 each, check payable to ECD, mailed to St. Johns Episcopal Church for the Deaf
The Rev. Dr. Nagel followed certain conventions that she explains as follows: 1. Any words in heavy type like this will most likely need to be fingerspelled, unless there is a specific sign for them in your locale. A few words are in underlined heavy type, which gives you the option of fingerspelling them or signing them with commonly accepted signs for those words; i.e., Jerusalem (J + city). 2. A word or phrase that is underlined should not be spelled or signed. Substitute the material immediately following in parentheses, which will give a reasonable sign-language translation of the meaning of that word or phrase. Example: one-another (each-other). 3. Where a word has a sign, but it may not be generally known in some areas, directions for making that sign are given in italics within parentheses following the underlined word: nation (circle N over back of other fist). 4. Please feel free to use your own local signs for proper names... |
